Program Description
Despite advances in prevention and therapy, HIV remains a leading public health challenge in the United States, with more than 1.2 million people living with HIV and approximately 30,000 new cases reported annually. Nearly 40% of individuals living with HIV are not consistently engaged in care, and only about two-thirds achieve sustained viral suppression, both of which contribute to ongoing transmission, increased health care costs, and widening care disparities among racial, ethnic, and age groups. For managed care professionals, these challenges translate into growing demands for value-based treatment selection, improved adherence support, and equitable access strategies that optimize clinical outcomes while containing costs. This session will explore updates in HIV prEP, including the latest clinical data on long-acting injectable antiretrovirals, combination regimens, and evolving guideline recommendations and real-world data on adherence and persistence. Faculty will review recent guideline updates and pivotal clinical trials to inform formulary decision-making, step-therapy sequencing, and prior authorization processes. The expert-led discussion will also highlight how pharmacists can support individualized care planning and targeted patient engagement efforts to address disparities and improve long-term viral suppression.
