Program Description
Pharmacogenomics is an area
of precision medicine that utilizes genetic variation to optimize medication
safety, efficacy, and outcomes. Many commonly prescribed medications in the
community setting are affected by genetic factors, making pharmacogenomic
testing highly relevant to everyday practice. Despite its growing
accessibility, pharmacogenomic testing remains underutilized in pharmacy
practice due to limited awareness. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians play a
vital role in bringing pharmacogenomic testing into community settings by
identifying opportunities to personalize therapy and improve patient care.
Therefore, education is essential to help pharmacy teams recognize its value
and begin incorporating it into practice. Participants will gain an
understanding of how to support personalized medicine and integrate
pharmacogenomic testing into pharmacy care processes. By understanding
pharmacogenomics principles and testing practices, pharmacy teams can improve
patient care.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify patients who may benefit from pharmacogenomic testing and incorporate basic result interpretation into medication selection and dosing strategies for appropriate patients.
- Apply pharmacogenomic concepts to medication therapy by identifying when gene–drug interactions are relevant and adjusting therapy accordingly.
- Explore practical approaches to implement pharmacogenomic testing in community pharmacy, including navigating challenges to implementation and current barriers that exist in workflow integration.
