This activity was originally presented live at Asembia's AXS26 Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada
Program Description
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease
characterized by heterogeneous presentation. Lupus nephritis (LN) is a severe
manifestation of SLE that presents with proteinuria, hematuria, and impaired
kidney function. LN is a primary driver of morbidity and mortality, and
guidelines support early reduction in proteinuria to improve long-term outcomes
and reduce risk of disease flares. This program dives into the intricate
landscape of SLE and LN, beginning with the clinical manifestations and the
burden of organ damage caused by chronic inflammation and discussing
limitations associated with standard-of-care corticosteroids and
immunosuppressants. Expert faculty will discuss the evolving management
paradigm for SLE and LN, with updated recommendations for reducing
corticosteroid exposure, as recommendations transition to include recently
approved and investigational biologics with novel mechanisms of action. By
aligning with recent guidelines, this session equips pharmacists to address the
significant economic impact of SLE and LN driven by frequent hospitalizations
and high health care resource utilization while defining their critical role
within the multidisciplinary team. The discussion will encompass best practices
to optimize patient pathways through monitoring, medication therapy management,
and the application of evidence-based strategies to reduce flares and improve
long-term quality of life for patients with SLE and LN.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Examine the epidemiology and pathophysiology of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis (LN) and the impact of disease progression on patient outcomes
- Apply updated clinical guidelines and new pharmacotherapy for the treatment of SLE and LN
- Employ new and emerging therapies into patient care in coordination with the multidisciplinary care team using an evidence-based approach that will optimize outcomes and rationally allocate health care resources for the treatment of SLE and LN
