Program Description
Prostate cancer is the most
common disease burdening men across the United States, and it is the second
leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men. In recent years, the use of
anti-androgen therapy has been shown to be effective in clinical trials with
use alongside PARP inhibitors. Earlier addition of anti-androgen therapy has
been employed to mitigate mortality associated with metastatic
castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Yet, rates of prostate cancer are
continuing to rise due to health disparities across the United States, such as
socioeconomic challenges, environmental exposures, and genetic factors.
Recognizing potential signs and symptoms of prostate cancer is key to
implementing more timely treatment for patients at heightened risk and ensuring
that treatment selection is personalized based on patient preference, molecular
testing, and accessibility. The activity will review emerging research in
cost-effective prostate cancer treatment through the optimization of
guideline-directed medical therapies. Key points within this article will
support managed care pharmacists in advocating for adherence to medications as
well as access to cost-effective regimens to appropriately treat the condition
and enhance men’s quality of life.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Assess the evolving treatment landscape for prostate cancer and the use of molecular testing in personalizing therapy to optimize patient outcomes
- Provide recent clinical and safety evidence for novel and emerging treatments, including anti-androgens, PARP inhibitors, and combination regimens for prostate cancer
- Investigate the economic considerations of advanced prostate cancer therapies and strategies to improve access, optimize outcomes, and manage costs in the context of managed care
