Program Description
Anemia is a common complication in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Patients with active IBD often experience chronic intestinal inflammation, which can affect appetite and contribute to a decrease in dietary iron intake as well as malabsorption. Iron replacement therapies in IBD aim to normalize hemoglobin levels and iron stores and improve quality of life (QoL) with treatment approaches involving the administration of oral or intravenous iron formulations. Pharmacists must be familiar with how to navigate the selection of these therapies for patients with IBD based on factors such as the acuteness of the anemia, product availability and costs, and patient preference and tolerability. This webinar will review guideline-recommended treatment for iron deficiency anemia in patients with IBD to equip pharmacists, through protocols, to promptly identify this complication and make preventive recommendations or initiate appropriate iron replacement therapies. This webinar is part of the Iron Deficiency Anemia Webinar series.
