Program Description

Chemotherapy can impose a substantial burden on patients with cancer who experience acute and chronic chemotherapy-related adverse events (AEs), including nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and pain. These AEs may occur soon after treatment initiation, leading to dose reductions and treatment delays. Gastrointestinal toxicities remain among the most common chemotherapy-related complications, as nearly one‑third of patients receive highly or moderately emetogenic regimens with rapid-onset nausea and vomiting, and many more experience these symptoms at some point during treatment; these AEs can often persist beyond active treatment, further impairing quality of life. Addressing these AEs may pose particular challenges in patients with cancer who are frail, older, or with polypharmacy for whom standard analgesics, antiemetics, and adjuvant pain therapies may be less tolerated or carry additive risks. It is important for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to be aware of over-the-counter integrative oncology and homeopathic products since patients and caregivers may actively seek these options for symptom relief as part of supportive cancer care and self-management. This article is designed to equip pharmacists in oncology and community settings with the clinical knowledge, communication skills, and practical strategies needed to evaluate chemotherapy-related symptom burden, discuss integrative options such as homeopathy in an evidence-informed manner, and optimize patient-centered supportive care. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will examine chemotherapy-related AEs and integrative options to support patients and caregivers in shared decision-making regarding symptom management with realistic expectations on the safe use of homeopathic therapies.
