In 2025, the FDA approved remibrutinib for the treatment of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), representing the first oral Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor indicated for this condition.

Program Description

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a common skin disease presenting with wheals and angioedema. It is a type 2 inflammatory disease with an inflammatory cascade involving immunoglobulin E (IgE), mast cells, basophils, and other inflammation markers. As new treatments become available, professional guidelines are updated to accommodate unmet needs. With new and investigational drugs offering individualized care based on biomarkers and unique clinical profiles, it is important that pharmacists' knowledge of CSU expands as these therapies enter treatment pathways. The session will also examine the significant quality of life burden affecting patients with CSU, with attention to itch burden and other type 2 comorbidities. The crucial role of specialty pharmacists in providing patient-centered, multidisciplinary care for the management of CSU, addressing treatment challenges, and using real-world data to inform treatment selection will be highlighted through shared patient interviews. Other discussion points will include pharmacist-led medication management including dosage, administration, and adverse effect management and strategies to overcome barriers to care.
