Program Description

In recent years, guideline updates have clarified the position of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in the treatment of recurrent or metastatic endometrial cancer. This session will provide a foundational review of endometrial cancer, including its molecular subtypes, with a focused discussion on the critical role of biomarkers in guiding the use of ICIs. As essential members of the oncology care team, pharmacists can ensure the appropriate selection of ICI regimens and verify that a patient is receiving the correct ICI regimen based on their specific tumor characteristics. The faculty discussion will also address practical considerations pertaining to the management of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) and outline approaches to monitor for and manage the unique adverse events associated with immunotherapy to significantly reduce patients' risk of severe or life-threatening complications. By understanding the nuances of ICI therapy and navigating biomarker-driven decisions, pharmacists can play a proactive role in preventing severe toxicities and treatment interruptions.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in the treatment of advanced or metastatic endometrial cancer, incorporating the latest clinical evidence and guideline-directed recommendations into practice
  2. Apply biomarker results to inform treatment selection, escalation, and de-escalation strategies for patients with advanced or metastatic endometrial cancer, with an emphasis on immunotherapy-based regimens
  3. Use evidence-based strategies for managing immune-related adverse events associated with ICI-based therapies for endometrial cancer, including dosing adjustments and therapy modifications
  4. Provide key considerations when counseling patients with endometrial cancer about the initiation and course of ICI-based therapies, including toxicity expectations, treatment duration, and follow-up care
