Program Description

With over 38 million Americans now living with diabetes and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) usage increasing more than twofold in the last decade, the management of diabetes as a chronic condition has rapidly shifted from reactive fingersticks to proactive, real-time data integration. Despite these technological strides, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians face significant challenges, including navigating complex administrative barriers to device access and ensuring that diverse patient populations can effectively utilize these tools to avoid diabetes-related complications. Pharmacists have become essential partners in diabetes care, facilitating the implementation of clinical guidelines and providing individualized care. This program will review the prevalence of diabetes before diving into modern glycemic management strategies featuring CGM devices, with attention on the different features of available prescription CGM devices in the community setting. In addition to highlights of the 2026 ADA Standards of Care, the session will review critical technological updates, such as the transition to updated CGM systems, the integration of CGM with automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, and the development of continuous ketone monitoring, while also providing practical updates on access and coverage considerations. By examining real-world use and strategies to overcome utilization barriers, this session will empower pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to improve their decision-making and better support people living with diabetes in achieving optimal metabolic health.
