Program Description

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are rare, chronic blood cancers arising from hematopoietic stem cells, characterized by overproduction of myeloid cells. MPNs are often underdiagnosed due to nonspecific symptoms, making molecular testing central to diagnosis and treatment planning. Novel agents and combination strategies are continually being investigated to address unmet needs, particularly for patients with suboptimal responses or resistance to JAK inhibitors. Oncology pharmacists play a critical role in precision medicine for MPNs, and their interventions require familiarity with molecular mutation data, the ability to discern treatment plans, and multidisiciplinary communication within the care team. They are integral to the design and implementation of patient-specific management plans for treatment-related toxicities, ensuring evidence-based supportive care is planned and implemented promptly. This session will focus on MPN symptom assessment, treatment algorithms, and emerging targeted therapies for MPNs to inform the oncology pharmacist's role in precision medicine using molecular data to guide treatment. This interactive session features patient case examples that will review shared decision-making and considerations for treatment of patients with MPNs.
