Program Description

Collaborative practice agreements (CPAs) can be significantly impactful opportunities for oncology pharmacists to expand their roles and contribute to patient care. Several studies have documented the benefits of CPAs in enhancing patient safety, facilitating more timely access to care, and generating greater efficiencies and cost-effectiveness in oncology pharmacy practice. However, the implementation of CPAs is often hindered by significant challenges and inconsistencies, including a lack of standardized state-level and federal policies, which creates a fragmented and confusing regulatory environment for pharmacists. Oncology pharmacists need to understand the essential elements of CPAs not only within their geographic practice areas but also within their physical practice sites. The 2025 Directions in Oncology Pharmacy keynote address will provide a comprehensive overview of how oncology pharmacists may participate in CPAs in a variety of oncology practice settings. The essential components of a CPA as well as examples of specific variations of CPAs will be reviewed. Key discussion points will center on specific institutional protocols needed to effectively operate under the CPA and assess what services oncology pharmacists can provide, what resources are available, and how to best integrate them into the existing team.
