Program Description
Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) remains a critical
public health challenge, as this devastating bacterial infection can lead to
permanent complications including hearing loss, limb amputations, and organ
failure within just 24 hours of onset. Despite these severe risks, vaccination
coverage in the United States remains suboptimal and uneven across serotypes
MenACWY and MenB, and this existing coverage gap is often made worse by public
confusion regarding the various serogroups and the nuances in vaccine
schedules. A key focus of this program will be utilizing updated guideline
recommendations and evidence to support the pharmacist's role as a partner in
individualized vaccination planning. As the meningococcal vaccine landscape
shifts with the use of pentavalent (MenABCWY) vaccines, pharmacists require a
thorough understanding of the appropriate role of the MenACWY, MenB, and
MenABCWY vaccines, as well as the latest guideline recommendations to ensure
appropriate and widespread vaccine uptake. By mastering these clinical updates
and shared decision-making strategies, pharmacists can lead the charge in
preventing the devastating personal and economic burdens associated with
meningococcal disease. This activity will connect the latest vaccine guidance
with the practical needs of the pharmacy team, featuring patient counseling
video vignettes that demonstrate effective communication techniques to improve
vaccine confidence.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate recent trends in meningococcal disease incidence and serogroup distribution to identify populations at increased risk.
- Compare and apply current evidence on the immunogenicity, safety, and duration of protection of available meningococcal vaccines, including MenACWY and MenB formulations, to guide vaccine selection.
- Assess the impact of social determinants of health on meningococcal vaccination disparities across diverse populations.
- Implement pharmacist-driven strategies and community-based interventions to increase meningococcal vaccine awareness, accessibility, and uptake.
