This activity was originally presented as a part of Immunology Specialty Pharmacy Day of Education 2025.
Program Description
Severe asthma poses a significant burden on patients and their caregivers, with exacerbations and symptoms affecting patients daily. A significant aspect of asthma, particularly in its moderate-to-severe forms, is the underlying type 2 inflammation that involves specific immune cells and cytokines (like IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13) that perpetuate airway inflammation. Traditional asthma management often falls short in achieving optimal disease control, and in recent years the development of targeted biologic therapies have been offered as therapy escalation for patients with uncontrolled moderate to severe asthma. A key focus will be the critical role of biologic therapies in this context, examining the safety and efficacy data, mechanisms of action, and their effectiveness in controlling exacerbations and reducing oral corticosteroid dependency, with an emphasis on strategies for pharmacists to identify patients who may benefit from targeted biologic therapy. The activity will provide practical guidance on individualizing biologic therapy integration based on patient-specific indications and explore specialty pharmacy considerations, including therapy initiation and selection, multidisciplinary collaboration, access, and ongoing monitoring and optimization of treatment. To provide a real-world perspective, this program will feature a Powered by Patients interview, offering direct insights into the experiences of an individual living with moderate to severe asthma and the unique challenges they encounter in their treatment journey.
