Program Description

Precision medicine has fundamentally altered the management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for approximately 85% of all lung cancer diagnoses and remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Biomarker testing is critical in NSCLC because it identifies specific genetic alterations that allow for the selection of targeted therapies, which have been shown to significantly improve progression-free survival and reduce systemic toxicity compared with traditional chemotherapy. Given the significant treatment burden and the complexity of the therapeutic landscape, identifying targetable genomic alterations is now becoming standard in NSCLC treatment and management plans. This session reviews the pharmacist’s role in navigating biomarker testing in NSCLC, from initial sample acquisition to the application of targeted therapies. Faculty experts will examine current guideline recommendations for mutational and genomic testing and address practical testing pearls, such as tissue requirements, turnaround times, and the logistics of coordination. Strategies for interpreting complex genomic reports using evidence-based resources will also be outlined. By reviewing institutional models and pharmacist-led interventions, including participation in molecular tumor boards and the utilization of EMR-based clinical decision support tools, oncology pharmacists will gain insights into overcoming common implementation barriers affecting practice.
