Program Description

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a rapidly progressing hematologic cancer that primarily affects older adults. Approximately 50% of all patients with AML who achieve a first remission will eventually relapse, and this rate is significantly higher in older adults, as many are unable to tolerate the intensive chemotherapy and consolidation therapy strategies. In recent years, the treatment landscape has transitioned from "7+3" chemotherapy to a complex landscape of molecularly targeted therapies, driven by molecular markers. The rapid approval of targeted agents like FLT3, IDH1/2, and menin inhibitors has transformed AML into a disease managed as much in the home as in the clinic. Yet, this approach also has introduced significant challenges surrounding next-generation sequencing results, adverse effect management, and appropriate medication use. This webinar will explore the pathophysiology of AML, with a focus on how menin inhibitors may be integrated into treatment regimens based on clinical trial data in the frontline, relapsed/refractory, and post-transplant AML settings. Expert faculty will discuss strategies to prevent and manage menin inhibitor-related adverse effects. Best practices to support the multidisciplinary team, share patient education, and implement community oncology pharmacy logistics will also be presented.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the mechanism of action of menin inhibitors and the therapeutic rationale in acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
  • Evaluate pivotal efficacy and safety data of commercially available and investigational menin inhibitors from clinical trials in AML
  • Identify strategies for monitoring and managing adverse effects associated with commercially available and investigational menin inhibitors for the treatment of AML
  • Develop pharmacist-led strategies to integrate menin inhibitors into AML care pathways, with attention to sequencing, adherence, and supportive care
