Optimizing Pediatric Medication Safety: Applying ADR Risk Factors and the KIDs List in Managed Care Practice

Program Description

Pediatric patients face elevated adverse drug reaction (ADR) risk due to immature and rapidly evolving physiology, frequent off-label medication use, and limited pediatric-specific clinical evidence. This activity examines the developmental pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic factors that heighten ADR risk across neonatal, infant, and pediatric age groups, and introduces the Key Potentially Inappropriate Drugs in Pediatrics (KIDs) List as a clinical decision-support tool for identifying medications and excipients that should be avoided or used with caution in children. Learners will also explore strategies for integrating KIDs List recommendations into health system workflows, including EHR-based clinical decision support and formulary optimization, to reduce preventable medication-related harm in pediatric patients.
