Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) and perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC) are IgE-mediated inflammatory reactions often triggered by allergens. While the clinical presentation is largely similar between the two conditions, SAC is often caused by outdoor allergens such as pollen and PAC may be triggered by indoor allergens such as house dust mites or animal dander. Pharmacists play a critical role in therapy selection for SAC and PAC because the medication landscape includes numerous OTC and prescription options with distinct mechanisms, onset times, and durations of action that must be matched to each patient's specific allergen exposure pattern and symptom severity. Understanding the nuances of OTC and prescription therapies for allergic conjunctivitis enables pharmacists to optimize therapy selection, counsel on proper administration, monitor for adverse effects, and identify patients requiring ophthalmology referral for refractory symptoms. This article also features multimedia elements designed to support evidence-based counseling approaches on OTC and prescription products for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis.
