Program Description
Hyperglycemia is a common and clinically significant adverse effect associated
with treatment with PI3K and AKT inhibitors in hormone receptor-positive (HR+)
breast cancer. Hyperglycemia occurs because the PI3K/AKT pathway, which is
targeted by these therapies to inhibit cancer cell growth, also plays a crucial
role in normal glucose metabolism. This webinar will provide oncology
pharmacists with a comprehensive overview of the PI3K/AKT/PTEN/mTOR pathway and
its role in HR+ breast cancer, as well as the mechanism of action for the PI3K
and AKT inhibitors. The pathophysiology of hyperglycemia induced by these
agents will be the focus of this discussion, equipping oncology pharmacists
with the knowledge to identify patients at risk and prepare for this common
adverse effect. If not promptly identified and managed, hyperglycemia can lead
to serious consequences, including dose interruptions or reductions that may
compromise the effectiveness of the anti-cancer treatment for patients. The
program will also review the incidence and severity of hyperglycemia as
observed in pivotal clinical trials as well as in real-world settings.
